Pierre-Marie-François de PAGES

Chez Moutard, à Paris 1782, in-8 (12,5X19cm), 432pp. et 272pp., 4 parties en 2 volumes reliés.

First edition, illustrated with 10 boards inset, including 7 large folding maps, a dismemberment of sea whales. All boards are found in the second volume in fine except for the folding plate of whale dismemberment.

The book includes the relationship of three trips. Volume 1 describes the travel Circumnavigation qu'effectua Pagès by the west for 4 years. After Louisiana, Texas Pagès crossed in leaving his ship in Santo Domingo, he traveled on the Mississippi. This is the earliest known description of Texas in an English-language book (when the book was translated). Pagès crossed Mexico, then went to the Phillipine and Java, in Mumbai and Surat, finally in Arabia, dating back to Saint John of Acre. Travel is also made by land and by sea, and the author has gleaned number of observations about the customs and manners of the people he has rubbed. The second volume is dedicated to two trips to the south pole (considerations of the Hottentots, the meeting) then north.
