First edition, beautifully illustrated and finely 3 figures, 15 header, and 10 tail-lamp, all by Eisen and engraved by de Launay young Helman, Masquelier, Born and Ponce. Printing on large paper.
Full mottled calf contemporary. Back tooled raised, wheels and tail head. Part of title in red morocco. Triple Net framework on boards. Gilt edges. Cap fragile head with gaps, same tail. Beautiful jaspure on flat (green, touge, beige). Despite minor flaws, fine copy in a luxury binding, and very fresh.
The volume, in addition to the preliminary parts, with essays on the dramatic genre of Marmontel, brings together three tragedies of the French theater of the seventeenth: Sophosnibe Du Ryer Scévole Mairet and Wenceslas Rotrou. This first volume was to be followed by several others, but the project failed. Beautiful publication.
