Paris infringement of the first edition under the title, previous called themselves indeed Letters of two lovers (whose original appeared in 1761). The editor Duchesne took the liberty of changing the original division of the letters (Volume 1: 65 Letters, Volume 2: 48 Letters, Volume 3: Volume 4 26 letters and 24 letters).
It is illustrated with a frontispiece of Cochin and twelve boards inset engraved by Le Mire with frames, of Plover. These figures are the same as those of the first edition, apart from the twelfth.
Title pages in red and black. This edition contains two prefaces, especially the famous second dialogued.
Binders of the time in the open marbled fawn calf, back smooth ornate coffered and gilded florets, parts of title and volume number of red morocco, cold filet coaching boards, net gilded highlighting the cuts, all marbled. Modern bookplate (stamp) on each volume.
Three rugged head caps with gaps and a threadbare, a missing tail cap. Three corners bumped.
This large sensitive novel that made the glory of the epistolary novel enjoyed a great success upon its release, we took 4000 copies of the first edition and the work knew no less than 70 editions between 1761 and 1800. The demand became so strong that publishers began to rent the volumes to day and even hour. The work was blacklisted in 1806 for insulting the values ??of the Church.
