Edition, and only edition of this flagship of the romantic picture book. It is abundantly illustrated with woodcuts by Bertall, 50 inset, whose frontispiece and 310 vignettes.
Half black sheepskin contemporary. Back smooth decorated with 4 cold chains, wheels golden tail and head. Brittle upper joint tail 2cm. Friction head and joints. Copy remarkably fresh, with very few and small pits, sometimes in high-margin, on a good white paper.
"Book illustrated with spirit by Bertall whose compositions perfectly complement a humorous text. There was only one issue which is very rare." (Carteret III, 48). Balzac would be chewed three times in this book which received the wrath of female readership for his misogyny.
