First edition

Victor HUGO Notre-Dame de Paris

Victor HUGO

Notre-Dame de Paris

Eugène Renduel, Paris 1836, In-8 (13,5x21,5cm), 380pp. et 428pp. et 352pp., 3 tomes en 3 volumes reliés.

First illustrated edition called Keepsake, it appeared a few months after that in an in-8 volume from the same publisher, more rare (there is also an edition in 2 volumes on the date of 1836); illustrated with a title-frontispiece and 10 inserts on steel printed on strong vellum paper by Johannot, Boulanger, Raffet, Rogier & Rouargue engraved by Finden, Staines ... Clouzot (Guide to the French bibliophile) specifies that it is normal in this edition that the page "of the utility of the windows" is missing. It is well printed in an airy typography with large margins, and close to the original published in 1831.
Binders in half glossy black calf of the time. Smooth back decorated with boxes with angular cold irons and central irons. Cold tail wheel and series of tail and head threads. The copper used for the title and the volume number is dimmed. Headdress of volume 1 partially torn off. A small lack in the tail cap of volume 3, and in the upper joint tail. Very rubbed paper boards. Folded and blunt corners. Lack of paper on the outer borders. Large lack of paper on the lower dish of volume II. Some notebooks emerged in volumes 2 and 3. The paper is on the whole rather fresh, which is rare for this edition mostly scorched; some pale browning and foxing in the margins, sometimes small spots and traces of clear wetting.
