Honoré de BALZAC Oeuvres complètes

Honoré de BALZAC

Oeuvres complètes

Houssiaux 1877, In-8 (14,5x23cm), 20 tomes en 20 volumes reliés.

Reprinting the works by Houssiaux who had bought the back of the Furne bookstore, in which the works were originally published, he completed them with three new volumes (Theâtre, Contes drolatiques ...) which appear for the first time in the works in 1855 and not in 1853. The edition will be reprinted in 1855 and 1870.
Binding made on brochure untrimmed half brown shagreen strictly contemporary, with the wrappers preserved and bound in (which explains the size a little larger volumes). Back with nerves decorated with nets on the nerves and a golden frame for the title and the tomaison. Titres and golden tomatoes. Slight friction on some nerves and caps. Some foxing and bites scattered on a fresh paper overall. Upper joint of volume XIV closely split along the first caisson.
Pretty good copy.

Illustrated book of 144 plates inset by the best artists of the time including Bertall, Daumier, Gavarni, Johannot, Nanteuil as well as rare in-text illustrations.
As always with these editions of the complete works, ours presents, one would be tempted to say "naturally" some notable peculiarities.
