First edition

first edition translated by Louis Viardot and illustrated by Tony Johannot First printing. Two headpieces printed on China, two engraved title pages and 800 large thumbnails in-text. As often, the second volume of 1840. This feature is actually quite common in publishing, even if we have difficulty understanding how the editor was able to mix volumes of the 1836 edition that of 1840, unless 2 runs were established simultaneously.
Binding semi antique black shagreen. Back with false nerves decorated with fat and lean nets, wheels and tail head. Title and volume number gilded. All relatively fresh, with very little foxing, concentrated on certain passages, including the preface. A few yellowed sheets in Volume I. In the Prologue to Volume I, brown trace internal margins of a paper web (bookmark) that was taken away on 3 sheets, from fading. Good copy, a good draw.
