José Maria de HEREDIA A une ville morte - Poème manuscrit autographe signé de José Maria de Hérédia

José Maria de HEREDIA

A une ville morte - Poème manuscrit autographe signé de José Maria de Hérédia

s.d. (circa 1893), 16x22,5cm, une feuille.

Sonnet autograph signed by José Maria de Heredia entitled "A dead city" and published for the first time in 1893 in the famous collection "The trophies", masterpiece of the poet.
To a bleak city. Cartagena of Indias 1532 - 1583 - 1697.
"Morne town, once queen of the oceans!
Today the shark pursues in peace the scombs
and the wandering cloud only extends the shadows
On your harbor where giant galleons rolled.
Since Drake and the assault of the English miscreants
Your cluttered walls crumble in black rubble
And, like a glorious necklace of dark pearls,
Pointis balls show the gaping holes.
Between the burning sky and the sea,
At the sleepy sun of a monotonous noon,
You dream, O Guerriere, to the old Conquistadors;
And, in the annoyance of warm, calm nights,
Rocking your faded glory, O City, you fall asleep,
Under the palm trees, with the long trembling palms.
