According to Louis Arnoult, Racan (Anecdotal History and criticism of his life and his works. Paris, A. Colin. 1896), this is the best edition of Bergeries. It is preceded by numerous rooms, the Epistle to the king, The ode to the king, various sonnets to himself, writing Malherbe. Racan wrote this pastoral drama when he was enamored of Catherine Bath, alias Arthénice in 1619. Caught in the turmoil of war, being himself a soldier, he will not return to his work much later. It is considered the most brilliant student of Malherbe, whom he met in 1605.
