Edward YOUNG Les nuits

Edward YOUNG

Les nuits

S.n., à Paris 1787, (8x13cm), (4) 257pp. et (4) 249pp. et (4) 279pp., 3 volumes reliés.

New edition, in the translation of Le Tourneur, after the first published in 1769. A frontispiece in a medallion, unsigned. The nights are followed by the Last Judgment, by Jeanne Gray and various works.
Full green morocco fir long grain contemporary in the style of Bozerian. Smooth back richly adorned with 4 circles in riddled boxes, roulette tail. Titres and golden tomatoes. Large frieze framing on the boards composed of various ornaments. Inner lace. Pink silk guards. Golden slices. Gildings slightly faded at the head of volume I. Fresh set.
Beautiful copies, superbly connected.
We know that the work enjoyed considerable success and many editions. The famous translation of Le tourneur accentuates the lugubrious side and the emphasis of the original, and contributed in France to make the work more famous than in England, making Young the leader of a new dark poetic school and pre-romantic whose roots originate in Milton.
